Is it compulsory for a lawyer to be registered with The Law Society in UK?

Yes.

No. The legal profession in the UK is somewhat complex, with different rules prevailing in England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. In addition, in England and Wales there is no fused profession and many lawyers are barristers, who have to be members of one of the four Inns of Court and whose records are maintained by the Bar Council. In Scotland there is a system whereby all lawyers are initially solicitors and some go on to specialise and be advocates. I am not conversant with the system in Northern Ireland. So the answer to your question is that it depends what kind of lawyer you are. If you are in practice as a solicitor in England and Wales, then you must be the holder of a practising certificate issued by the Law Society. This is something which has to be constantly updated. If you are not in private practice but employed as a lawyer, then you must also be in good standing with your professional body and be paying your annual subscription and keeping up your professional training as required. The fact that a lawyer in the UK is not registered with the Law Society may simply be an indication that he is a lawyer other than an English solicitor.
