Is it fair to pay a man more?

If I went to the same school as a man. We got the exact same education. Which cost us the same amount of money. And we both had the same GPA. Why would the man make more money than me?
It's a fact that has been researched that for every $1 a man makes a woman doing the same job makes less. WHY?

The on-costs for women are higher - maternity leave, etc.
Further, studies show that with women who never have a family, they earn more than men.
It is a lifestyle difference, that means that women do not produce as much for the employer. |

believe in any field of business in this day and age. you are more likely to recieve less as a woman , while men recieve more. It's a common double standard that has been around for years or should i say centuries. I mean for example hilary clinton and barrac obama, many people believe he is going to win the campaign simply because he's man. when have you ever heard of a woman president. think about it.
me personally i want her to win. Men are not to good at thinking with their heads instead of their you know what. Look at George W. Bush. lol |

No, it is totally unfair, the sad thing is one of our presidential candidates supports this idea. If you ask me it is a slap in the face of the women's movement. (A woman can pay spousal support but she doesn't get equal pay, how does that make sense, just goes to show that some people are only out for themselves and their interest groups.)
People always bring up maternity leave, most women in higher positions don't have children or husbands. |

I agree with the comment that males can be more aggressive and that's probably a lot to do with it.
"If I went to the same school as a man. We got the exact same education. Which cost us the same amount of money. And we both had the same GPA. Why would the man make more money than me?"
What if you don't have the same raw skill as the male in question? Would it be fair to pay you the same amount of money just because you're female? |

Way of life. Its ment to be equal rights for both but it just isnt. I suppose its kinda because women are likely to need time off for maternity leave so employers think they can favour men. |

I disagree that it is because women are less aggressive. I consider myself to be a very aggressive person when I want something. In my previous job I was the HR Coordinator and made decent money. I felt I was doing a fabulous job. I was moved to another department because it was failing and needed help. They put a man in my old position and I know that he made way more money than I did. I had asked on several occasions for a raise. I even sat down with my boss and showed them all of the extra work I was doing basically for free. I was told that it "wasn't in the budget". Then they turned around and created a new job for me so that I could mend a program and hired a new guy and paid him way more. I know it was because I am a woman. The sad part is, my boss was a woman too! Another reason could be because aggressive women intimidate their male superiors and that is their way of "getting back at them" I guess you could say. Or maybe I'm just over analyzing the whole situation! But, to answer your question, no its not fair! |

You cite a bunch of factors that employers basically care nothing about. Who does the better quality work? That's all that should matter. |

Wow, don't you just love the guy's answers? No, I don't think it's fair, thats just stupid, after all women are smarter. |

yea theyre often paid much less, but this can be because of a variety of issues, for example women are more likely to take more holidays of work (maternity leave, etc), whereas men would obviously not go on a maternity leave. wel i hopes this helped |

Well, dont be mad at the messenger, but consider this example:
These 2 employees in your question, say they work at the same firm for 3 years before they quit---
The guy has 2 kids, and take 2 weeks of leave for each one. He is out 4 weeks total. The woman has 2 kids, and takes 6 months leave for each one.
So youre left with a guy who gets 156 weeks of pay (3 years * 52 weeks) for working 152 weeks, and a woman who gets 156 weeks of pay for working 104 weeks. To the employer, the man is worth more. In addition to that, if the guy has no or small medical bills, the company has little expenses from him, but the woman probably generates 100k plus in medical expenses. If the firm is large and self-insures, thats a lot of money out of their bottom line. At about $33k a year in salary, a guy would cost about 100k to employ for 3 years, and the woman would cost 200k or more for 2 years worth of work, so the guy is just worth more.
I'll probably get ripped on for this, and Im not saying its justified, and the above is a bit of an extreme example that isnt typical of all workers, but its what I think goes through corporations executive's minds. |
