Is it illegal for an employer to...?
in the US generally NO...........

yes there is always a possibility that the pay is unfair under equal pay laws enforced by the EEOC but that is highly unlikely. if that is the case it does not cost you anything to have the EEOC look into it BUT you need to know that this type of violation is what you are asking about before you proceed down that road.

to learn about equal pay laws and what does and does not constitute a violation:

Of course not. Why would you think it would be?

The question is complicated and you haven't given quite enough information. Are you a female training a male? Are your job titles and descriptions equivalent or are other people training the other worker as well so that the scope of his/her job will be greater? There may be illegal discrimination involved, but you haven't provided enough information to make that clear.

Starting pay is often the result of negotiating skills, not discrimination. Once you've begun a job, you're stuck with the base pay that you began with. It could be that your coworker negotiated his starting pay more aggressively. If you did not, you can't blame your employer or your coworker.

No, it's not illegal.

Galling, but not illegal.

An employer can ask whoever they want to train whoever they want, if you don't like it quit, there not going to raise your pay though so that you can train someone else who would be making more money than you.
