I was recently offered a job with a huge television company, as a "brand ambassador", someone who will promote their network. They first told me that they want people aged 18-26, but just now told me they only want those aged 18-24. I am 25, so can not take the job now. Is what they did illegal?

It's not illegal, but definitely unethical. In the long run, you will be better off because this company has already showed you what they're made of.

Also, this job sounds like a scam. It may very well be legit, but the way they are acting sounds like it's a scam and they are purposely trying to recruit college students who are not very "worldy" yet. You may have come off as too experienced or smart to them, but then again it could be a very legit position and someone just changed their minds. That doesn't really make sense from a professional level unless they wanted you to promote to people your own age and be seen by those people. I wouldn't want to work for a company that acts unprofessional like that. It is just a sign that there will be further problems ahead. |

No, age discrimination laws only apply to people over 40. Below that, their requirements aren't illegal. If they said they wanted someone under 40, they'd have to be able to show that it was a true job requirement. |
