Yep. Completely, thoroughly, and VERY illegal.
The California labor board will FRY any company that did that. File a complaint.

You should be getting paid to learn how to do the job that they expect you to do. Training is always paid for. You are taking time out of your day to learn about how to do your job, you should be getting paid.
Speak up and don't let them take advantage of you and get free labor out of you. |

You absolutely need to be paid and you need to fill out all the forms (W-4, proof of citizenship, etc.) BEFORE you start working. If they haven't provided you with these forms, you need to demand that you get them, fill them out, and get paid. Essentially, CA does not view you as a legal employee until the proper paperwork is filled out. Don't fall for the we're-testing-you-out thing (I did that ages ago and ended up working two shifts for free before figuring out they just wanted someone to work for free). All jobs have a probationary period/training period, during which you are entitled to be paid. |
