Is it legal for a parent to be asked a child's social security number on a job application? If the child is 18 and living out side the house? What thing could they need it for? What could they do with it?

If your child is 18 then they are a legally consenting adult.
The only reason a company would need this information is post-hire - and only if you are listing them as a beneficiary for a company provided insurance policy of some kind. Asking for this informaiton up front would be illegal unless there is a legal or securiuty reason for them to have it. |

Yes, it's "legal" to ask. That doesn't mean you have to provide it. There is no reason to provide children's SSNs on an APPLICATION. |

I would not provide it until they can explain to you what the purpose of this is. If the child is going to be on the health insurance they would list the dependent under your social number. Ask the manager why they need this information. |

The only reason an employer would need a child's SSN would be if that child was going to be covered under the company insurance program. And that wouldn't been needed at the application stage. |
