If someone leaves something for you on your desk, and it has your name on it and it says private, does your employer have the right to open it and go through it?

I think that is an offense, something against your personal privacy. Opening up letters not addressed to you can be looked as a big deal;especially if it clearly states "private". And I do not think it matters if its on company property; then It would be okay if your boss when through your car too. |

when it says private, it creates curiosity to anyone to know what it is. If its really private, then its always better to receive in person than leaving on desk. You will have no idea on the states of your stuff even if its labelled private and seen by anyone in your absence unless you have concrete reasons to believe it has been seen. |

While it is unethical, it was not illegal. Simply marking an article private does not make it exclusive. Anything delivered to the company is a corporate receivable and can be handled at the company's discretion, as inconsiderate as it might be. Personal and private business should be just that, personal and private. If you expose it in a public forum, an unfavorable outcome should not be a surprise.
This is especially true in the 9/11 world. What was once considered innocent, is now an item of suspicion. Just try to be more careful in the future. Good Luck. |
