Is it legal for an employer to publicly post actual employees' wages?

I don't think it is illegal, but it should be undesirable for the company to do so, unless they pay commission only.

It's not the best idea in the world. The last thing you want your employees to do is compare their wages and start demanding raises based on what others make.

not illegal but in poor taste

Some employees wages are part of the public record, such as government workers, school teachers, police officers, that sort of thing. So if some can be posted, they all can.

I would have loved to have that to happen with my company so we know if some people are walking around doing nothing and eventually get good salary compared to hard working folks out there who get just a small portion of that.

Expert Realtor
Yes it is. Salaries are not legally confidential.

Keep in mind that many professions, teachers, police officers, postal workers...or any gov't employee, their salaries are public information.

Brenda
It's not illegal, but it is definatly opening a can of worms.

In some cases, it's a requirement. If the company has hired an employee who requires sponsorship for immigration, they may be required to openly recruit to fill that job in order to ensure that the immigrant is not filling a job that could be filled by a US citizen. Part of that process involves posting the job internally, including the starting wage being paid (the wage of the immigrant who currently occupies the position.)

If that isn't the case, then it is not illegal to openly post employee wages but it is certainly setting up the employer for employee dissatisfaction and claims of discrimination, disparate treatment, and so on. I don't think it's a wise move.

The salary may be public information, but everything else isn't.

My overtime, my vacation, my sick leave, my withholding, my retirement contributions, my healthcare, charitable contributions, union dues, etal ARE NOT public information.

Yes. It's legal.

No, that is private information. Some will post salary ranges for particular positions. "Accounting Clerk A salary range is $9.00/hr - $11.00/hr" If the company has published salary ranges (which will show in a handbook or on a company web site) then this is not showing that "Employee Bob Jones earns $35K a year."

Steve is cool
If it is a publicly traded company then they have to post the salaries.

The answer would most likely depend on where you live (what country) and if you work for a public (government) or private organization.

It is public knowledge as to what the salaries of elected officials are in the US. Most civil service positions have a salary range that is usually findable in the public domain. For a private organization, I think it is tacky. Whether it is legal or illegal, it is still tacky.
