Is it legal for employer to take on staff, expecting them to work one week trial - with no pay?

My daughter is only working there up until Xmas, for extra cash etc for Xmas Pressies. She is to be paid monthly, but now told the 1 week trial is without any pay? It is hard work, on your feet and I think 'unlawful' to expect FREE LABOUR.

Sounds fishy to me. Call your governmental labor board.

if you are daft enough to do it they will stick it to you.

I went into the UK minimum wage website. They must pay your daughter for any and all time worked. The number listed is:

No that is considered slave labor, contact your local national labor relations board and report this, in addition contact your local congressman and get this company investigated, if this has been going on for awhile, could be a big lawsuit, in fact get a lawyer for your daughter.

I think you're in the UK. If so, they can only insist on it if that was made clear at the outset and she has agreed to it. They cannot move the goalposts subsequently. It should be in the terms and conditions etc..

She may have to work 1 weeks lang time and should get the 1 week money back when she leaves the job. Well least thats the way I think lang time works. Some places in Scotland make you do 2 weeks lang time.

I'd guess from your spelling that you are in the UK. In the US, this is not legal, although companies do try to get away with it periodically. From a legal standpoint, most folks don't bother fighting it since the most they stand to gain is a week's back pay.

You'd need to check with your local labor office to see what the rules are in your area. I agree with you - the last time we had free labor it was also known as slavery......

Ask M
I would contact the Labor Board in your area, doesn't sound right.

She should be paid for ever hour she works .

If the're not paying her they are not her employer for that week so they can do what they like.

She wants the job or she doesn't.
The prospective employer calls the shots

probably not, call your local employment security department, probably a state agency.

they can hire you on probation for a week, but they should pay you even if you are let go after the week.

sounds like a scam, look for another job.

whaticantbeme
that's free labor and she should not be doing it. You need to contact someone about it, if she is a teenager some one at her school should be able to help since she would need a work permit to work. Also I personally don't think it's a good idea to be paid monthly, who gets paid like that?
