Is it legal for my job to be closed the day after a major holiday (i.e. the day after Christmas) and not pay you but force you to use PTO or take the day without pay?

Yes...vacation or holiday pay in not a requirement in the US and there are no laws/regulations covering it. So the option is use leave or not get paid. |

A lot of companies are forcing people to use a PTO day... if so, you still get paid. That's what PTO is.
If you are forced to take the day off without pay, that's legal as well. It's just the way the economy is forcing companies to cut corners and mind their payables. |

Around here that is legal. So, probably yes. Check your local labor board or related department. They will know laws pertaining to labor in your area. |

If they are closed, then why should they pay you? They are giving you the option to use one of your PTO's so that you aren't a day short when your paycheck comes, or save your PTO and take a day without pay. What's wrong with that? It's completely legal. |
