Is it legal for your employer to dictate that you lie to your customers when running thier business?
Find answers to your legal question.

Is it legal for your employer to dictate that you lie to your customers when running thier business?

I am not comfortable with lying to anyone. Being forced to do so is like going against my religion. So I ended up leaving my job due to this. I am having delays in finding work right now, so I am wondering if this was even legal. Would I be able to draw unemployment?

Check with your local employment commission office. However, I applaude your decision not to lie. I am sure that you can find something else. At least you can sleep at night, best pillow is good conscience. It is not worth working for someone like that.

Best in job search.

If you quit, you're just not going to get unemployment. Sorry.

Is it legal to demand you lie? Depends on what you're lying about--in many cases, no it would not be legal. (Say you were a loan officer and lied about material facts of the loan--that's a huge no-no. Say you work at a car dealership and you're told to tout the cars--the best, so mileage efficient, never had a complaint, blah blah--that's basically puffery and you're not going to be able to say that's not part of the typical sales job).

Maybe try a temp agency--some income, so exposure to jobs, may land something full-time.

Good luck.

If you can prove that you quit because you were being ordered to lie, you MIGHT be able to get unemployment comp. It doesn't hurt to apply....

If you quit a job, you're pretty much screwed in unemployment. Your only choice is to get another job.

I know you can't draw unemployment if you quit your job. You have to be fired or laid off. I know because I'm currently drawing it myself while seeking employment.

However, I guess the "legality" of it would depend on exactly what they were having you to say. You haven't provided a lot of details in that regard.

Nope, you gotta get canned or laid off and be employed full time for a year b/4 you're eligible.

Depends on the lie. In most cases, if you quit voluntarily you are not eligible for unemployment benefits. You could make the case that being forced to lie made the working conditions a "hostile environment." Again it depends on what exactly they were asking you do do. For example, at my work we sometimes have to shut down our server. We tell our employees to tell any complaining customer that we are having an "upgrade" installed. Technically, it is a lie - but I don't think most folks would have a problem with it.

Irrationally held truths - may be more harmful - than reasoned errors.
Other things may change us, - but we start and end with family.
It is dangerous to be right - when the employer is wrong.
