Is it legal in NSW to be fired because you instructed your employer that you are looking for another job?

I have been having issues with getting my wages from work, for the last two weeks my wages has been a week late each. During this time I was charged over $130 in fees for being late with bills because I had not been paid. My employer told me this was not their problem. I told them I could no longer afford to work for them anymore if they were not paying me on time and wouldnt pay my late fees. I told them I would begin to look for another job, and when I found one, I would give them two weeks notice.

The next day they fired me. Giving me a letter saying that my dismissal was due to them no longer needing someone in my position.

They gave me one weeks notice.

Is this legal? Can they get away with this? I am now officially economically screwed.

Dismissal law is complicated and depends on what kind of employer you work for and how many employees they have and also whether you are a casual or permanant employee.

If they are a corporation AND have more than 100 employees you may have recourse to unfair dismissal. Also if they are not a corporation you may have an unfair dismissal action.
