I am fully aware that attorneys receive a JD degree. (Juris Doctor degree) But I have never seen any attorney represent themselves as a Doctor. For example: Dr. John Doe, JD
Is this legal or ethical??? Or what is your overall opinion???

I am a practicing attorney, and have been so for over 20 years. "Juris doctor" is not the equivalent of a medical degree or a doctorate, andso lawyers are not entitled to call themselves "Doctor." It may not be illegal, but it would be unethical to do so.
However, that being said, there are a lot of lawyers who WISH they were doctors! |

Lawyers usually do not hold themselves out as Doctors although they do have a doctorate degree. Esquire is the common term used by most attorneys. It is certainly not illegal or unethical as attorneys have earned doctorates. |

Check with your state bar association. I researched this issue in another state.
The answer was that it was state specific. In the particular state for which I researched the issue, it was perfectly legal for an individual who had successfully graduated from an accredited law school, albeit not passed the bar exam, to use the professional prefix of Dr., but was not legally entitled to use Esq.
Conversely, an individual that had successfully graduated from an accredited law school, and also passed the bar exam was legally entitled to use either Esq. or Dr.
Individuals that had attended an accredited law school, but did 'not' graduate were not legally entitled to use either Esq. or Dr. |

Some people are really proud of that PhD and want to use the title of "Doctor" as their honorific. They are technically entitled to do so and it is both legal and ethical.
People to whom they are introduced are technically entitled to enquire where the attorney attended medical school, since the assumption in the US is that the honorific of "Doctor" is reserved for those whose education resulted in an MD. |
