Is it legal to advise employees not to ask for raises? That in doing so may jeopardize future promotions?
|
My boss informed me several weeks ago that I was up for a promotion. She was getting my information together to submit to our VP & HR. Not long after she informed me of this, our proformace evaluations were due. So she called me in & said I was doing great & was very certain my promotion would come through. She also mentioned that she wasn't sure how much of a raise I would get but hopefully I would be satisfied. I began to ask her if she knew any specifics about the raise & she said no that would be up to our VP to determine. I then inquired about possibly sheduling a meeting with our VP to inquire about a raise (I have an amount I'm looking for like most people). My boss cut me short & strongly adviced that I do nothing of the sort. She told me, I shouldn't even know about this promotion, & it's "unwritten policy" that employees 'do not ask for raises.' If I did I would most certianly loose my promotion & our VP wouldn't be happy that I knew of all this. IS THIS EVEN LEGAL? Strange.. Additional Details I guess what I was most surprised about it the "unwritten policy" that "employees do not ask for raises." If I get the promotion, and say the raise is below what I think I'm worth, should I ask? I understood that as even if I got the promotion and asked I would still be stepping on toes and maybe later on they wouldn't promote me at all. I guess the question is, 'can an employer tell employees that you can't ask for a raise. Doing so could hurt future advancement?' I've never been advised not to ask, it just came out of left field for me.

she said you're getting a raise - so be happy - there is no reason to know what is is right now. Since you ARE getting promoted, it should include a raise that is more than the standard 3-4% that everyone in the world typically gets. It sounds like your company gives annual reviews and raises, so your question about legality is irrelevant. When you get the official promotion and they tell you your raise - that is the time to question it if it winds up being lower than you expected. don't say or do anything until then. |

It doesn't sound like a legal issue. It is a political issue with your boss. She is trying to be nice to you. If you bypass her and talk to the VP about your promotion or a raise, it would make her look bad. It would look like she could not manage you and you were not happy with her or with where you are. I bet she won't be happy at all if she sees you talking to the VP. Imagine what you would FEEL if your kid complained to her teacher about the food at home. |
