Is it legal to cut employee bonus to pay back broken/missing equipment without telling the employee .?

I lost my bonuses a few times, and when I asked why, the supervisor told me because of the restaurant lost an equipment three years ago.
The lost equipment was an old and broken equipment, the company decided to replace that equipment with more advance, and cost 4x more expensive than the lost equipment.
I was never told how much money do I owe the company.

Are you responsible for the loss of equipment
If Not your employer should not deduct the same from your bonus
He should show reasons for cutting
May be your organization is not having rules that exist in general

unless the bonus is part of a contractual agreement, it can be given or taken away it is the same as a gift
