Iam a a managing director of a company and have just been demoted for no apparent reason. they have also cut my pay to the point that i cant afford to stay.is this legal.

If your no longer doing the job they arn't going to pay you the rate for it are they?
If you got promoted then you would expect a higher salary, so if you get demoted you should expect a lower salary.... |

you can't get an accurate answer to a legal question without including the jurisdiction in that question................
IF
you are in the US and don't have a contract that specifically addresses this issue then YES they can cut your pay because of the demotion....they can cut your pay for no reason at all as long as it remains above minimum wage.
IF
you were a "managing director" you should have a better understanding of labor issues for where you live and work. |

Yes it is very much legal, sorry to say this but there is nothing you can do about it, these days they have lots of reasons they can say and depends on. |

Yes, it's legal. Unless you have a contract that says otherwise, your pay can be cut even if you aren't demoted. |

It sounds legal. The question is do you want to work for a company like that? If you have a contract for your employment, then you may have a case against the demotion/cut in pay. |

Yes, unless you belong to a Union that has given you some employee rights. This is done all the time in the retail and fast food Business, it is a easy way to get ride of employees instead of firing them which then could cause law suites or investigations by EEO or Unemployment office. They even do this were I work which is for the DOD, they will take a manager and but him back to a mechanic thus cutting his pay by 30%. Good Luck |

Companies don't normally demote people for "no apparent reason". Not being able to afford you is a reason. Yes, they can cut pay based on demotion. You're paid based on your position in the first place. Be thankful you even still have a job. |

They could be doing what is called constructive dismissal, which is where they make you position so bad that you resign instead of being fired.However if you are an E.U. citizen and you have a contract of employment with no provisions for demotions you can take them to court as they are breaching your contract.However, if it is a necessary redundancy then you're pretty much screwed.
If you work in the U.S., I don't know what the situation is. |
