I mean, I wanna launch a product under a different name than my REAL name. Is this legal?
Or how about posting in forums under a pen name?

According to U.S. Copyright Office, a pseudonym or pen name itself is not protected by copyright and If you are writing under a pseudonym but wish to be identified by your legal name in the records of the Copyright Office, you should give your legal name and your pseudonym when filling out your application.
It will not be legal if you launch a product under a different name than your real name.
You can definitely post under your pen name in forums, provided you inform the authorities of the forum about this.

everybody uses pen names and aliases in the internet. it is part of marketing yourself. however, for legal documents like business license, contracts, bank accounts, etc., you should use and sign using your legal name. |

You can always post in forums anonymously. But when you say you want to "launch a product," what does that mean? You may run into trademark infringement claims if it turns out someone is already using a similar name/slogan/mark for the type of product you're trying to launch. To cover yourself, you'll need to do a search for both registered and non-registered trademarks that are similar to the one you're thinking of using for your product. |
