My mind is constantly preoccupied with my job and outsourcing (I'm a programmer :/), and it just came to me the other day that, theoretically, someone could ship their job offshore and keep the difference in wage (Indian programmers are willing to work for $9-12 an hour). I've yet to see any governments regulations on this practice, though I know some regulation over offshore outsourcing must exist. So could this be done? If so, is any government moderating this and what is being done to control/curb/stop it?

You could certainly pay someone to do your work for you and keep the difference. I imagine your boss wouldn't like it too much. First you would have to spend all day looking busy at work while not actually doing the work (since you are paying someone else to do it for you.)
And if yoru boss ever found out, he'd probably fire you and hire the guy you were paying less to do the same work.
You would also possibly be violating work rules regarding intellectual property, since I imagine most progamming frims would rather their code not be spread around to non-employees.
So it would not be against any laws, but you'd get fired if you got caught. |

Just remember that if the coding is faulty, YOU get the blame, not the actual person who coded it. |

Outsourcing work is not illegal. Plenty of large companies do it, particularly the call centers for customer service/financial.
If you work for yourself outsourcing your job shouldn't be a problem. However, if you work for someone else and you outsource your job your employer won't have any reason to keep you on the payroll. |

Sure its legal. It is capitalism and I don't think there are any government measures designed to curb it. For most businesses though, it represents a business risk shipping the labor offshore. We see it now with the Chinese toy scandals. I understand that you are a programmer, and that is immeasurably more intellectual, but if the quality of Indian labor meets U.S. labor quality, why shouldn't they send the work offshore? |
