Is it legal to recieve a 7 day notice of layoff?

michr
generally YES unless you are covered by the WARN Act in which case 60 days is required. a few states have a "baby" WARN Act that covers employers in situations not covered by WARN.

for more info concerning WARN see:
http://www.doleta.gov/layoff/warn.cfm
and for assistance with layoff issues and benefits available see:

Would you prefer NO notice? Because that's legal to.

Be grateful your employer notified you of their intentions and gave you some time to try and secure other work.

Yes, unless you have a contract that says otherwise.

where is everybody?
take your 7 days and apply for unemployment.

Yes. As long as you are not under a contract that states otherwise, you can be let go from most jobs with no advance warning at all.

It's legal to receive a 1 hr notice. Depending on your state and the length of your employment, there may be a requirement for severance pay in lieu of notice, but in most places there is no actual legal requirement for any notice or pay in lieu.

If it's a mass layoff, and your location has more than 50 employees, then certain federal laws require advance notice of 60 days, I believe. But if your boss just lays off one or two people here and there, or if it's a smaller company, then I believe that there are no other requirements for advance notice. 7 days might even be generous, in many cases. If you're getting laid off, sorry to hear that! Hang in there!

Yes, they're not required to give you any notice. You can apply for unemployment, though.

Sure... my last layoff notice was about two minutes. Others could get several months if their business or branch is closing.

This answer is based on what I know, Some jobs like government jobs must give 30 day notice unless they have it in their contract otherwise, different states have different regulations, and under some conditions depending on the size of the company they are required to give 60 day notices, the best thing to do is call your local state labor board to find out. However getting laid off is better than being fired, at least your competent en ought to go back to work if they need you. If they fired you your would have a waiting period to get you unemployment check.

Yeah, I think so. I believe they can lay anyone off the next day if they have to.
