Is it legal to require someone's social security number in an application for a job?

I'm applying for a job, but I was told that I shouldn't give out my social security number to anyone. (This is my first job) It's a required field on the application, is it okay to give them my social security number?

This has been an issue for years and the answer is all the same. Is it legal? Yes. Do you have to provide it? NO. Unless you have been offered the job OR they advise you we are interested in hiring you but the job is contingent on your background check I would never give AND I have not given my SS# to the last 5 places I applied for a position and at no time was this an issue with the exception of one place and I explained my position as to why I refused. No problem and I received a call several days later they wanted to hire me but needed to do a background check first. It is not safe you will be leaving your SS# at lord knows how many places AND you DO NOT know how secure there offices are. On the field write: Will happily provide upon contingent job offer.

Very legal, and necessary if you get the job.

Yes. You must give it to them. That's what it's for.

The SSN is needed to report earning and payroll taxes. AT&T is forcing people to give their SSNs over the phone or through email to multiple contracting houses in the hope of just being able to apply for work. Then AT&T uses the SSN to block highly qualified candidates from applying. Why? Well they say it has to do with internal rules they are making based on leaving with certain severance packages. THOSE THESE PACKAGES SAID WE COULD RETURN. WHat we all have in common is that the majority of us are over 40. The EEOC is suing AT&T for age discrimination. Though AT&T is still risking the identity of tons of people who give their SSNs via email or phone calls to people thet do not know who do not work for AT&T. Why? so AT&T can make the rules. Is this legal? If thieves know your SSN they can access your banking information, utilities and other personal information as well as establish new credit in your name.
