Is it legal to work for free at 13 years old in Michigan, United States?

When I use the word 'work' it sounds like child labor laws would prevent that. However, I'm 13 years old and want to work, even if it is for free. I know that at 14 years old, I can work a certain amount of hours with a work permit. Would this be seen as volunteering and be legal?
