Is it possible to make it to BigLaw as a lateral attorney?

Is it possible to make it to BigLaw as a lateral attorney?

I am in my final year of law school, and have missed my opportunity to begin my career as a first year associate at a large law firm. I am not upset about it currently, as I am not interested in that work environment. However, if I decide 5 years from now that I do want to work at a large law firm, is it still possible? Or will they still focus on where I went to school and where I ranked?

It depends on your work history prior to making the lateral move. The majority of moves (non-BigLaw to BigLaw transitions) that I have seen are former government attorneys making the transition to Biglaw. For example, the litigation department of certain firms may look kindly upon former AUSAs and some corporate departments may like former SEC attorneys. I think it depends on where you are starting off. I have never seen someone go from public interest to Biglaw. But, I haven't been stomping the halls of law firms for very long. Another notable transition is a clerkship to a Biglaw position. So, if you have a judicial clerkship, preferably one with a federal judge, or a governmental position, i.e., SEC attorney, then you are pretty good shape. Also, specializing in a certain field, i.e., environmental law, may help you make the transition. Assuming that you would get a book of business you may be able to bring over to the firm. Otherwise, it may be hard to make the transition.

Also, all my sources tell me that grades still matter later on for lateral moves. Your grades may not play as big of a role as they did during OCI, but they will still play some role. Depending on how far you are removed from your law school years may determine how much weight the firm gives your grades and law school. Best of luck, either way.
