Is it right I was passed up for promotion for this reason?
Find answers to your legal question.

Is it right I was passed up for promotion for this reason?

Recently a job was advertised internally at the place where I work. Myself and one other colleague applied for it. I am younger but have been with this place for twice as long and without blowing my own trumpet I am much better at the job! I am much more professional in my manner and get better results. Everyone else thought I was a shoe in for the job...

Frustratingly the job went to my colleague which I suspect was for one reason only...the person who will be managing this role is soon to go on maternity leave and I think they are trying to make sure they are still indispensable when they return. The person they have given the promotion to will do what is asked of them...no more, no less. Whereas I am the sort of person that would take the job and run with it and make what we do as good as can be. I am obviously not pliable enough so am being held back to ensure this manager is still needed upon their return....

It is so frustrating but yet I feel powerless as to being able to do anything about it...any advice??

with nothing to base my opinion on other then this question/post/rant....
i would have the feeling that you are still a bit immature and not ready for management. there are those who are the greatest employees/task masters that turn into the worse managers/leaders/delegators.
being the very best at your job does not make you the very best for a supervisory role.
IF the only reason you were passed up was, as you have stated,
then i would agree that it may not be fair but.................
life and work are not always fair.
as far as was it right.............well only time will tell if they made the right decision, if they did not it will show and the position will be opened up for someone better.

any advice??
communicate openly, honestly and professionally with the manager and have a discussion about why you got passed up this time. focus on what you need to do not what you think you have already done. ask for guidance don't make excuses or place blame.
prepare yourself for the next opportunity by learning from this one.

Nothing legally that you can do, only a shift is perspective is what you need. Work even harder and hopefully something better comes along.

Thats really just your theory on why u didnt get promoted; could be or it couldnt be. My advice would be to keep working hard and keep your eyes open for new oppurtunities. Its reason like this that i dont like working for people.

don't do anything to jeopardize the job i have a feeling that if you keep on working hard you just might get the promotion you're looking for, even if it isn't till a bit later, like you said you're young, you'll get your chance again.

That may not be the reason you didn't get the promotion. Your boss may like her better, may feel she is more productive or her work product may be better, her communication skills may be better. Have you spoken to your boss? Did you discuss the promotion with your boss beforehand? Letting your superiors know how interested you are in a job with more responsibility is a great start at getting ahead.

You have your opinion about why you didn't get the job. Even if you are right, there is nothing illegal about it.

And by the way it' shoo in not shoe.

My only advice is to look for another job, or else ask your manager why you didn't get it - you might learn something valuable..

I am guessing that you a little to smug for the job. If you keep the attitude, I would guess you won't get future promotions either.

If you are really are that good you will get the job you deserve. Remember things always happen for a reason, maybe there is something even better coming your way..
