Is it unprofessional for an employer to ask if "Your in it for the long run or short term" ?

Well, the company where I work is falling apart. (Medical Clinics)

One of our owners left and took back some of his property (sites/building)
Now our CFO and COO are leaving.

So my boss, the CFO, was asked by our Owner/CEO to ask me if i'm in it for the long run, or just short term.

I am the IT guy for the whole company/network. I dont get paid much, and I dont get along with our CEO because he doesnt seem to understand the need for an IT person in an electronic/paperless medical clinic with all patient records being stored on a central server. (Yea, he needs a clue) Yes we work on a WAN. Plus, there is nowhere to go in this company, and of course..its falling apart.

Obviously im looking for a new job....but I have no idea what i'm supposed to answer ??

Anyone got any insight ???

It's not unprofessional to ask, but is pretty dumb. What kind of answer is he going to get? It's not like a lot of people will say to him "I'm just in it for the short term" even if they have an interview elsewhere the next day.

they are forcing you to lie. If you feel you have to lie, don't feel guilty about it. They will show you no loyalty, don't feel you owe them any.

It's not unprofessional as such, but it is Non Of Their Business. Unless you are working under an employment contract (very few people do), you are not required to give them any notice of resignation. The common courtesy is two-weeks notice.

If they decide they don't need you on Wednesday, you'll be gone on Thursday.

I would tell them what you think they want to hear, then give whatever notice you can when you leave. Don't worry about them, they aren't worrying about you.
