Is it worth it for a 31-year-old woman to go to law school?

I got my bachelor's late in life in humanities and am contemplating law school. I think I can get into at least tier 2 schools.
But let's say I go and graduate. By then, I will be about 36 years old, and I want to have kids before I'm 40. My husband is an engineer and makes decent money.
Would it be worth it for me to go to law school at this point? Can lawyers work part time, even if they're right out of college?

You need to get some experience and most law firms are not interested in part timers. However, in today's economy if you have benefits from your husband's job, I would offer myself part time and tell them they don't have to pay your medical so there would be a big savings. In today's economy they may be interested. You will only get paralegal work to do out of the house without experience. I would do it anyway. Once the kids are in school you will go to work fulltime. You have 30-40 years of work ahead of you after you get your degree. My cousin's daughter who is an attorney works out of her house putting together briefs for the law firm she used to work for while her kids are young. She gets paid by the hour, but she has experience with the firm. |

If its something you really want to do; go for it! Anything is possible. However, I dont think you can work part-time. You dont have to have kids by you 40 you can have them in your 40's too. Besides, you can work things out when it come to that point. You could get a babysitter during the day. Its not like you would be gone all the time. You could still see them. It would be like having any other job. |

Yes you can go to law school. Yes you can work part-time if you find the right firm. The questions is the $150k in debt when you are done and how you will pay that. So if part time works for you then go. |

hmm...

sure! don't let anything get in the way of your dreams! Also, I know attorneys who are mothers who work part time or on a contract basis. It's definitely do-able, you just have to find a job at a small firm that will support you-- most large firms make you work ridiculous hours. |

Yes it is totally worth it, you should do it, you will never have to worry about finances and if you think you can do it, then go for it. Lawyers can work part time, shoot for the stars! |

This answer is going to have substantial dependence on personal motivations. Do you want to be a lawyer? I mean do you really want to be a lawyer? If it's something you want, then it's worth it. If you are just doing it for the extra money, then it's probably not. As a lawyer, you can probably make money working part time. I do not, however, know this for a fact. Good luck in your decision. |

You would be in the perfect position to work for yourself. Maybe doing real estate closings?
You don't have to go the straight line of a law firm. Most corporations have lawyers on their staff. |

If you want a $150,000 salary and along with your husband, the engineer, you guys easily make $230,000 a year.
Say hello to that pool, BMW, 3 story house in that rich neighborhood! |

That is up to you. I have two sisters that are lawyers and went to law school in their 30's then started families in fact one of them is married to an engineer. And yes they can work part time. However there is a glut of lawyers out there. |

I am a 31 year old man who is going for a bachelor degree in computer science. I already have bachelor degree in mathematics. The reason I am going for CS is that the economy is terrible and could not find any job with math bachelor's. I received BS in math last year but no use.
So definitely go for it. The reward would be huge. I also may not finish BS in CS by age 34 or 35 because it is a very challenging major. |

It's never too late to get an education! If it's something you want, then go for it. I'm not really sure about working part time, but I'm sure if you could find a family oriented firm, they would find a way to work around your home life... |

Yes, it is worth it! I didn't go to college at all until I was 44. Now, at 53 I have the career I always dreamed of.
The average employee working today will not retire until they are over 70, so you have about 40 more years to work. That's about 37 or 38 years of practicing law, after you get your degree.
However, you might want to consider trying to get pregnant now, and either put off going to law school a few years, or try to get pregnant while you are going to law school. (You can go to school part time after you have a baby, if you really want to.)
Every year that you wait makes it that much harder to get pregnant. If you wait until you're 40, there is no guarantee that you will ever be able to have children. Most couples struggling with infertility say, "we wish we'd started trying earlier!"
By the way, you could also have a child now and go to law school in 10 years or so. I know right now 41 seems really, really old...but it's not. People go to school when they're in their 60s and 70s now. |

If want a practical answer............no.............your cost would not be recoverable.......children would seriously hamper your career ....... if you could get a job........at 36 your competition would be at least ten years younger and not interested in children or part time work...law schools are putting out thousands of attorneys a year all young and hungry and willing to work for nothing just for the experience...sorry......unless you want to work for nothing.......in a prison or something like that for your own personal satisfaction.......forget it............sorry. |
