Is my boss being unreasonable about doing freelance work?

I work part time for a company that does website marketing and website maintenance. I am a qualified graphic designer and I want to do some freelance work on the side to bring in some more money because my boss cannot offer me any more hours and also because I enjoy it and need to save a house deposit. I also am getting paid less at this job than my last one because she is a small business. My boss has told me that this is a conflict of interest and is now saying that the company offers design services because she refers people to website designers. I get the impression she doesn't want me to do any design work and wants to control what I do in my own life outside work. The work is not at all impacting on my ability to be at and do my job well and I am not doing any work for anyone doing business with her.
I don't believe this is a conflict of interest at all and that my boss is being unreasonable. Can anyone offer any advice? Thanks :)

PS: She also is unhappy about me doing print design work and copywriting work!

It sounds to me as though she is interpreting the contract to her advantage. However, it says what is says.
Have the contract reviewed by an attorney, just in case it something else that u have not remembered to share with us. Once you get the okay from an attorney, do whatever you want! |

It does sound like she's being unreasonable. But considering what she's saying and your contract terms, I suggest you give up on the freelancing unless you quit or she fires you. If you continue to freelance while working for her she can (and probably will) sue you for breach of contract. |

no she is just a greedy b****. She has no control over what u on youor own time. just DO NOT do the freelance work at your job... even on your lunch break. just dont mention it to her again, and if she brings it up tell her that u are not doing any freelance work.
PS: she is greedy and i would look for a different job because 1. ur boss is an ***. 2. its a small company which means almost no chance to get promoted to higher positions. 3. i only forsee trouble with this *** of a boss. 4. copywrite all of your work why should anyone be able to use stuff u created for profit? |

Read your appointment letter, is there anything about conflict of interest, the second thing. check in your appointment letter does it refer that you can not do anyother jog like part time or freelance work. while working for the currently company. |
