Hi, I work for a legitimate pet sitting business. i mostly do walks and day visits. I get paid 12/hr.
My boss recently asked me to stay overnight at client's house, 6pm friday- 6pm saturday. I can come and go as I please. The only guidelines are that I have to sleep there, and walk the dog once on friday and three times on saturday.
My boss wants to pay me a measly 30 dollars. Minimum wage here is 8/hr. I feel like this should be illegal. Does anyone have knowledge in wage laws?

Even though you can come and go as you please you're still "on call". Besides the last time I looked, most people sleep 6-8 hrs. per night, and obviously you have to stay at this house while your sleeping.
Don't be confrontational with your boss, but let him/her know that you feel underpaid. Maybe you can come to a compromise. |

Since you can come and go as you please, it's not illegal and they don't have to pay you minimum wage for the 24 hours.
If you aren't happy with the $30, then don't do it. |

It's a gray area. Because you can come and go, and don't have any defined tasks to perform, you're not really working those hours. Nor are you really on call, which means liable to be called in to work at any time.
Still it seems like a small amount for 4 walks in total. I'd ask for more.

It's not illegal ... just say no if you don't want to do it. Sounds like pretty easy money to me, though. |

If you're legal then yes it is illegal. If you're a documented worker... you should get minimum wage depending on what state you live in.
