There is generally no obligation on an employer to provide a reference about an employee or ex-employee unless there is an express or implied contractual obligation to do so; however, there are a few exceptions to this. You may have legal remedies only if you are able to successfully argue that your former employer's failure to provide a reference is for a discriminatory reason. |

No. It is a preference from your previous employer/s. In saying that, your potential employer cannot contact any of your past vocation employers unless stated as a Referee or Reference in your CV so choose them carefully. These days it is vital that you provide as many referees as possible, especially in apllying for any government jobs. |

Most companies have stopped the practice of providing references, and will only "verify" previous employment by providing dates of employment, title, and salary upon request. There are many liabilities associated with providing references - it usually isn't really about "blacklisting" anyone. |

No, however, it doesn't look good to a potential employer if your fomer employer refuses to give you a reference. Some companies will as a policy only give out that you worked there, the dates you started and ended and how much you were being paid.
I was terminated by a previous employer without cause, when my head hunter called for a reference to gage the reaction of my former employer they refused to give a reference over the phone and asked simply for her to fax a request and they will fill it out as far as employment goes. She said that it didn't look good and could be a potential red flag to potential employers.
Hopefully you haven't burned any bridges and can always find someone who will give you a professional reference at the job. I got let go from a job by the district manager, however, my boss said she would be more than happy to give me a reference in the future, I still use her to this day.
