Is there a law out there stating that an employee has to get certain amount of hours of sleep a night?
|
My boss puts me to close (midnight) one night and then open (6am) the very next day. Between the things I do in order to go to sleep and getting to work that's only like 4 hours of sleep!
So.. is there a law out there that can prevent him from doing this? Additional Details I live in Florida.

for most jobs...NO
under federal and state law there is no mandatory requirement for amount of time off for the majority of jobs. there are a few such as transportation, trucking, mining etcetera that do have laws concerning time off between shifts.
Speak to your employer about your concerns and how the lack of time off effects your ability to be productive. ask your employer to work with you to develop the needed staff or management to prevent this from happening in the future.
communication is a great tool..................when used!
'Emily' hate to burst your bubble but in New York there are no such restrictions (except as noted above and in nursing) on scheduling of shifts. many employers by policy schedule this way but not because it is the law.

No, there's no law against that. But you of course have the right to quit. |

Check with the department of labor in Florida. I am not sure about the law there but in New York you must have 8 hours between shifts. |

Sadly, no. The only real option you have is to tell him that you need to work a little kinder hours or you are going to move on. |

Don't think so. You should just talk to him about it and tell him you have have a hard time working to your full potential when you don't have enough sleep. He should understand. Maybe he'll change your schedule around. |

It depends on the type of job you are in. For some jobs like Over the road truck drivers, lifeguards, heavy machine operators etc, there are limits on the length of shifts, requirements for breaks etc. You should check with the local department of Labor about the OSHA regulations for your particular type of job. |
