Is there a law that states an employer has to give a certain amount of time to notify an employee to work?
Find answers to your legal question.

Is there a law that states an employer has to give a certain amount of time to notify an employee to work?

In other words is it legal for my boss to call me and 9 AM and say I have to work at 3 PM? When I wasn't scheduled to work today.

A source would be awesome but if anyone just generally knows that's good enough.
Thanks!

There is a law that the shift working schedule for the ensuing week has to be displayed on the notice board. Further , asking an employee to work on a day when he was not scheduled to work on that day amounts to overtime, which is governed by Fair Labor Standards Act . Hence the action of your employer is illegal.

It's not illegal. If you don't come in when they need you, then you might end up getting laid off in the future.

unless you signed some form of agreement that you would not be available at the specific time asked and at the time of signing that agreement, your boss read it and agreed to it, yes. it is legal for him to ask that.

on a personal level, taking the time when asked shows initiative and is better for job security than saying NO. can the boss fire you for not working on your day off? i doubt it.
