Find answers to your legal question.

Is there a paralegal out there that can give me some job advice?

Three years ago, I graduated with a college diploma from a two-year paralegal program. I had no luck finding a job, I think I may have given up too easy, Im not really sure. I also think that it might have something to do with having no experience. Anyways, it's three years later and I want to give it another shot, I am very determined. Currently I am taking a "refresher" correspondence paralegal course because I have lost all confidence. What Im trying to say is...Is there any advice you can give me for obtaining a job. What should I be applying for, are there some jobs that are easier to get than others, where should I start? who would be more likely to hire someone with the education but no experience? help! any advice will help, thankyou so much!!!

I would contact your local NALS organization. NALS is a Nation Legal Association that includes anyone in the legal field that is a support person including court personel. The local assication will have an emplyment chairperson who will help you find a job even an entry level positon. My boss pays my dues which are $108.00 per year. I paid the first year and my boss (attorney) pays now. They also offer classes to get you certified as a PLS or a PP which are professional legal secretary or a professional paralegal. If you already have your decree you can join go on the national website and find one in your area.

I just started a paralegal certificate course. I have learned that you almost always have to have experience. No one hires a paralegal unless they have experience. Every ad I see wants about 2 years worth. So, I am now trying to find an entry-level job so I can start getting the experience. The schools do not tell you this, but my prof alluded to it and the people in my class who are in law firms say you need to have a background.

You need to start applying for file clerk, admin. asst., secretary jobs, etc. That way, you can get your foot in the door. Also apply to very small firms who may give you a chance. I am finding no one in my area will hire a paralegal without law firm experience.

Also, where you go to school is very important. Many lawyers want graduates of ABA-approved programs, which is why I chose a community college (I have a BA) that is approved. Correspondence courses and online schools are not approved, so I am not sure that is going to add to your resume in the eyes of the lawyers who are looking for approved coursework.

Keep trying. I am sending resumes whenever I see something.

try going through temp agency. they can place you on short contracts. you can then acquire experience. some temp agencies also place people on long term.

Apply to all large law firms and corporate legal departments every 3 month. Jobs come and go. Persistence pays.
