Really depends on where you live. If you live in Midwest, then you are stuck. In CA and TX, the big box stores like Home Depot, Lowes, Office Max and Best Buy usually started out at $8.50 for experienced cashiers. But that was before the recession hit, now I don't know of anyone that's really hiring, much less paying above $7.50.
I was at Best Buy the other day, the guy I talked to about a PC had a college degree in computers and 10 years as a programmer before he got laid off in June. It's really tough out there right now. |

There aren't many, if any, employers out there paying $10/hr for cashiers anymore. Depot used to pay that, but stopped about 4 years ago (but it also depends on where you live; ie: NYC, you'll still get it but outside the city, no way). Its an employers market right now with so many people out of work, there's no competition for employees. I literally had 50 applications for every seasonal position that I was hiring for this year and could pick and choose amongst high school and college students, former corporate employees, military personnel returning from active duty just to name a few...all for minimum wage positions. Hang on to your job. |
