Is there any kind of law that says your company has to pay you if you show up to work and they send you home?
|
Example: You show up to work, and there is no power, so no way to do your job, they send you home, or; severe weather conditions but no one from the company calls you to tell you that there is no work today and so you drove all the way there for nothing. And no, I'm not talking about being sent home in the middle of the day for any reason, only showing up in the morning (or whenever your shift starts) just to be sent back home. I've been told that if you show up, legally they have to pay you for 1/2 a day. Additional Details Ok, I guess my question wasn't clear...I want to know if there is a law regarding the issue, and if so, please have proof to back it up...thank you.

There is no LAW stating this. However, many companies have a policy of a minimum 4 hour shift if you show up for regularly scheduled work. In some industries, if you are a member of a union, this is a benefit.
However, there is no LAW that states they have to pay you for this. |

If you are an hourly employee, they only have to pay you for the hours you work, unless you have something different in your employment contract. |

Most union companies have a clause in their contract. If you're non-union, they can pretty well do as they please. Call an attorney and ask him this question. They have free consultations. |

Legally if you are scheduled to work and then there is no work for you, you must be paid two hours of "reporting time" pay in most industries (check the wage order for yoru industry at www.dol.gov to find specifics.)
However, this does typically not pertain to "acts of God" - fires, power outages, floods, earthquakes, hurricanes and the like which could affect a business's ability to operate. |

No, this is not true. They do not have to pay you if they do not need you. |
