One of my friends was involuntarily seperated from a reputable telecom company in IL as a result of a work force reduction/restructuring. He was promoted 4 months ago and that prevented him from looking for other jobs within the company in this period without management approval. He was given the pink slip and was told that it was due to an elimination of the position and not related to his performance.

Well, having been there and done that twice in my telecom career, I suggest that your friend not take it personally and get busy finding a company that will appreciate their experience.
Sadly, they may have known at the time of the promotion that the position was going to be eliminated, but that's the way the corporate world works. They change directions in how they are going to market their products and services and eliminate the people that no longer support that direction.
Your friend was promoted, so that means that they saw something in him, so that can be a big positive for applying for other jobs.
When asked why he left his former job, he should always answer that he was subject to a reduction in force and do NOT show any animosity toward the other company. Hiring managers will watch for any negative about that and make a decision to look elsewhere. It's better that he understand that business is constantly changing, which results in changing employee needs, and project the understanding that HE was recognized for HIS performance by getting promoted, but a bean counter looked at the picture and recognized his position as no longer supporting the company plans.
You cannot control the things that happen to you, you can only control your reaction to them. Move on, there's probably a better job with a better paycheck around the corner...get out there and find it. |

No law in most states. Most states are "employee at will" states. Means you can quit anytime without reason and your employer can terminate you at any time without reason.
If he thinks it is discrimination, he can see a labor law attorney for a free consultation. It'll be more accurate than asking folks on the Internet. |
