I have a friend that is working in a factory. They are making some of the people there work 7 days a week. This is his second week working 7 days. Now the factory is talking about making them work another 7days a week or so. Isn't there a law or something that prevents jobs from overworking their employees??

There could be. It depends on where you live. Labor laws vary from one state to the next. Go to your state's main Web site, and poke around for something like the Department of Labor. That should have a link to all the state laws regarding employment.

There are few laws that I know of that dictate maximum hours an employee is allowed to work. I think the government believes, and rightly so, that it should be a matter between the employer and employee. If an employee must work that much to survive it wouldn't be fair for government to prevent them. If an employer NEEDs workers 7 days a week and the employee doesn't mind then why should government intervene? If your friend doesn't like working 7 days he should have read the contract of employment... he can always give his notice and quit... or if there was no contract he can just walk off the job if he doesn't like it. You say it's a factory so I'm guessing they have pique seasons when they have to work really hard and long hours certain times of the year. Same is true for farmers. Government should not be forcing people to take days off work. People have a right to earn a living. |

There's no federal law restricting that. Some states do but it's not common. Illionois requires one day off each week unless a waiver is given, and that requires that all of the 7-day workers be volunteers..
But federal law does require overtime pay for most jobs for hours over 40 in a week, so your friend should at least be making a lot of money even if he's too tired to enjoy it right away. |

I would imagine there would be, but since this is the USA the answer is no there is no law. Look at how many days Doctors, Lawyers, Dentists, etc... and the hours they put in. |

No, but there is a law (in California) that says a person cannot return to work without getting at least 8 hours between shifts.
I'm not sure, so don't quote me, though. |
