A few years ago, I applied at a TCBY yogurt in Charlotte, NC. Three weeks have passed since application I come in and ask the girl about my application. You know what she told me? She told me the guy manager only mostly hires women. She said that he thinks women work harder than men. I could not believe that. Also I applied at this Hollywood Video in Charlotte where it turns out that the only guy in there was the manager, and Im sure hes been hiring nothing but women. I mean I dont live there anymore and I got a better job, but still I felt that was kind of wrong to deny me a job because Im a male. I dont hate women, but I feel I should have as much of a right as a woman to get a job. Is there something I can do about this even though Im five states away? Should I tell the Mayor? Isnt there a thing called equal employment opportunity that every company must follow?

Proving this as discrimination to the EEOC or the NC Dept of Labor would be difficult. This is why
1. An associate told you that the manager prefers to hire women. That associate is probably not very reliable since she doesn't speak for management.
2. You probably went in during a shift that more women than men. The video store overall probably hired about the same ratio of men and women.
3. Your application probably didn't have the experience that they were looking for.
NC is an "at will" employer which means they can hire or fire for practically any reason.
However, if you did have significant experience and you know for sure that there are more women than men working at these locations than you may have a case. If this is true, contact the NC dept of Labor. |

Discrimination is against the law. Period. I am sure both TCBY and Hollywood Video state that they are "Equal Opportunity Employers. |

You can't do anything about it and the mayor isn't going to care either.
You took the word of a minimum-hour employee and assumed she was correct. She was not a manager nor authorized to speak on behalf of the company.
You assumed that when you walked into Hollywood video, and saw only one guy there, you assumed that he was the only one employed at that location....no one even told you that.
You can't go through life thinking you have a court case when you let your imagination run away with you and you get unreliable information from people that don't even matter, like the girl from TCBY.
You can call the EEOC if you want, but you won't get passed the first phone call with them. |

Naw, it's a private enterprise (not run by the state or federal government or their agencies or from their funds) so... it's okay for the individual managers to have their own hiring practices. It's not cool, to be sure, but it's not actionable. |

This is completely illegal. There are EEO (Equal Employment Opportunity) laws that every employer must follow. If you wanted, you could file a complaint with the EEOC (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission). They will do an investigation and more than likely give you a "right to sue" letter which you can then take to an attorney... That's if you wanted to go through the headache of litigation. |

I would tell someone 'cause that's not right. women might work better than men lol, but they can't deny you a job JUST because you are male. It's wrong and goes against what we as Americans believe. Equal rights to all. |
