Is this illegal/discrimination?
Find answers to your legal question.

Is this illegal/discrimination?

I recently applied for a job and was told my application would not even be looked at due to the fact that my fiance works for the same company. We would be working in different towns, and I was told that it would not make a difference, because things have happened in the past.

Is this legal? Would it be considered discrimination?

So they can discriminate against you based on who your boyfriend is?

Wow, what has this world came to?

I agree with piggie pal.... in addition, most companies do not allow couples to work together. My friend and her fiance work together and if they were caught she would face tons of problems because it is in the company policy.

It is not a discrimination.

They don't hire you because of the ground of your fiance work in the same company. It is not a prohibitive element based on most of federal and state discrimination regulations.

It is not even a gender discrimination like other suggests because when you are in an opposite position, it will still happen.

Bottom line, the action by the company is totally legal and ethical.

It's legal. Many companies have similar policies.

It may not be fair, but not illegal.

Companies do have the right to have a policy like the one you describe, and a lot of them do have these. Yes, you would be working in different towns now, but what if they close one of your offices and the only alternative would be for you to transfer to his office or he to yours? Also, they have to worry about both of you being gone at the same time for vacations, or family emergency's. If you work at a company and then start dating or get married they can not fire you based on just that one factor, but they can refuse to hire someone in the same family or a spouse. (You mention that he is your fiance not just a boyfriend right?)
