Is this legal? Boss asking for money?

Is this legal? Boss asking for money?

I live in Ontario, Canada, and currently am working at a gas station. Usually one of us works one at a time, so the only other hands in our till are the ones switching money over at the start and end of a shift.

My boss constantly is asking people to pay their shortages, which in a way is understandable, but she doesn't provide anyone with "why" or "when", just "This much, right now". I've been working there for a while so I know the main shortage reasons, they include:

A) Just being short, probably by miscounting change
B) Being short on lottery tickets. (People are bad for not counting these, so I'm not sure how she narrows it down to who's fault it is.)
C) "Drive-offs". Not the general: flip the bird and drive away. People have this tendency to swipe their card at the pump and not wait for authorization, jump in their car and leave. For some reason management calls this a "fake" drive-off. (IMO, shouldn't you be waiting for a receipt/approved?) There's also an occasion when they come in, and leave without paying, whether it's our fault for not charging, or them lying when we asked if they had gas. (The store gets QUITE busy sometimes, and it's hard to keep track of who's coming in from what pump when all the lots are full, along with all the side parking spaces.)

Luckily I work midnights, so it's almost impossible for me to be short, but I watch everyone around me (mainly 3-11 shifts) get nailed with this. When they refuse to pay, the boss seems to find something wrong with them and either fires them, or treats them so badly that it forces them to quit. People keep coming to me for advice on this, but I never know what to tell them other than it doesn't *SOUND* legal, and that she should be sitting down to discuss this instead of just demanding the money.

So.. is this legal? If not, is there an official site that explains specifically what kind of shortages a boss can ask to be paid?

Absolutely not legal. I had a boss when I worked as a waitress who used to do this, and we were all too young to know better. He claimed we were responsible for each of our drawers, but if that was true, that would make me like, a co-owner of that drawer. Anyway, check the site below for specifics.

It is not necessarily legal. Each state may treat it differently. She can fire them for the mistake of not getting the proper funds but she can not make them pay for their mistakes. Now when it is small amounts like not counting change right we (the clerks)usually take it out of pocket to pay the shortage so we keep our job. It is up to each clerk to decide how much the job is worth. As far as the customer cheating by driving off the clerk has no way to prevent this action so they can not be held responsible financially or be fired over this. What they can do is take it to the employment office. There is federal laws called the Fair Labor Standards act that is being violated. Each state administers the act and improper firing can be penalized. It is especially important since when these people apply for another job they should not be treated as if they are unable to handle the clerk job when it is impossible to control. That is like a bank holding the tellers responsible for the money lost in a bank robbery.

no not legal at all. The pumps should not give gas without authorization at all. They may get a back up but it is their responsibility to do a proper job in any case so they just need to take more time with each customer and if people leave when there is a rush then he just looses business
