Is this legal or against the law?

I have been looking for the answer to this question for some time, but no one could give me any clear answer.

Perhaps the knowledgeable members of the Yahoo community can give me a answer.

Is there any law stating that it's would be illegal to:

Place an ad in a news paper, telling people that if they send me, for example 5 Dollars, I will send them info to make a two hundred Dollars in a week.
Then I send them the info telling them: to place an ad in the paper, tell them to get people to send them $5 and then sharing this info in turn etc etc etc...

Not that I want to do this, of course ;-) I genuinely just want to know.
I don't want to be be part of any win- lose deal.

Genuine answers are much appreciated.

Well you are scamming people and it would soon get out that you are scamming, although most people are clever enough to realise it anyway. I suppose it isn't exactly illegal...depends on how you word it. Asking for people to send you money and telling them they can place an ad would be their own choice if they were to follow it, but it wouldn't get you anywhere

This is a Ponzi scheme and is illegal in the U.S.....It's very common in the U.K. and is very similar to what mr.. Madoff has been doing

Logic316
No, it's an age-old pyramid scheme.
You're not actually selling a real product or a service, just a way to move money around where the people at the bottom of the pyramid invariably end up losing their money.

Landlord
This is a pyramid scheme and illegal in the USA. It is a federal crime.

I do not know if it is illegal elsewhere.

KUGAL
We traditionally used to call those chain letters and I know that if they ask you to send in money that they were illegal--I think under the postal laws. I am sure they have made illegal the same activity over the internet (if that is how you were goign to contact them).

Politicalcorrectnessisgay
Illegal pyramid or ponzi scheme. Dont get banged up.

Since they're not going to be making anything near $200 a week, you're basically printing an ad that's lying to people. Most newspapers have rules against that kind of thing.

I'm sure in most states such an ad would be in violation of their fraud statutes.

Cari
It is ILLEGAL. Others have already correctly stated that it is in the US, but it is in the UK also.

It is a "pyramid scheme" which is defined as a scheme whereby money changes hands for the purpose of enrolling people in a scheme, without a service being delivered.

Astano
It would be legal as long as the way to obtain $200 in a week was legal. Of course you'd be lucky if anyone bothered sending you anything. There is one way to make $200 in a week its called get a job.

Im a second year Law student and its not illegal to do that. There is no law that's stopping you from doing that. Its like... ur making a contract with these people, ur making a clear offer, and they are accepting it by paying the $5 to you. So no, thats not illegal.

COLIN T
It is not illegal, it IS unethical, it has been done many times before.
There is an attendant risk that one of the people that sent you $20 could get that annoyed at your reply that they come knocking at your door baseball bat in hand to get either their money back or take it out of your skin in kind.

Its not illegal, people are advertising this scam all the time and there are plenty of people out there who will gladly hand over money for no gain whatsoever.
