I work at a mall where the store gets charged $100 for every hour it's not open. The owner of the store has decided to take $50 from the pay checks of whom ever opens the store late. Can she do this?
My mom said she couldn't because of the loss and damage law in Washington. I am curious what others think or know.

I'd say no, since garnishment can only happen with a court order. But since Washington is an "at-will" state, employees can be terminated for any reason, as long as it's not because of your race etc. or if you have a contract, it doesn't go against the contract. So she could fire you for opening the store late. |

Show up on time then you have no problem with this do you? Myself would just fire the employee that is continually late and costing me money |

Well, if you open late, she can dock you for the time you aren't working but are supposed to be. I doubt that would be $50 though. |
