Is working at a prison a good job?
|
I have talked to multiple people that worked at a maximum security . prison and the all have told me the same thing, that they love it, because they get paid descent, they don't do much but stand around and talk to other guards and that it really isn't all that dangerous plus you get like 4 days on 4 days off, I'm just wanting to know from other people that have worked at an actual prison and know what there talking about, and it is a job at a prison so i know it isn't all just fun and games, i just want to know cus i am consitering on geting a job at one

It is not a great job but it is ok. All it takes is for one guard to get "beat up" by inmates and you will be on edge for the next 6 months. The best job is "intake" because it is like a day at the circus.
The pay is definitely good and also the benefits.. |

Check out California prison guards, some are making big bucks with overtime, six-figures+. All prison guards get generous state benefits and a pension after 20 years. Something the private work force used to offer but has largely stopped doing.
I have met several corrections officers, they were dumb, fat, lazy, hanging out and you could feel they were just looking for that twenty year clock to ring.
It is an easy job, but I think there are some prisons where it would not be enjoyable, so I would do research. |

I currently work at a jail. It is horrible. But one man's poison is another man's pleasure. The things I deal with are: constant profanity and nastiness from the arrested people. Sad faces, dirty looks, personal attacks. Also working in a jail you get exposed to things like TB and other airborne diseases from the inmates they bring to jail. It is a depressing place to be. |

Do it 20yrs and you can retire then get a check for the rest of your life I know alot of people that do it and they love it. Good Benefits, Good Pay, 20yrs pension plan, job security when economy is bad(people always get locked up and or serving time. I say do it but always be careful anyway I work a job where I can retire at 38 and keep on working, it feel good to know that once I did my time for a employer I will receive a check for the rest of my life. The way things are going Social security may not be around to draw when we are old anyway Good Luck and God Bless |

It depends on the person. If you are able to get told bad things all day, and not react to it, then you should be able to survive the job. Some days are easy, others are hell. CO's don't get paid for the everyday, they get paid for what could happen.
Here are some things to think about,
-Diseases- Prison is full of them, and there are inmates that love to spread them. How would you feel getting HIV, Hepatitis, Staph, TB, etc...? I know many CO's that got diseases from the job, and they can't leave them at the gate.
-Gassed- Having bodily fluids thrown on you, mostly at your face. Feces, Urine, Blood, Seamen, Saliva, etc... See Diseases above
-Assault- Physical, Mental, etc.... CO's have been killed, raped, and seriously injured.
You will see the lowest of society, and have to protect them. How do you feel protecting a child molester? Are you willing to stop two inmates from killing each other? Are you willing to shoot an inmate to prevent an escape or GBI? How about going into a cell covered in blood to stop an inmate from killing them self? Will you go onto a yard where you are outnumbered to stop a riot? Two Words, Potty Watch! Will you search an inmates feces for drugs, weapon, or a kite?
CO's get a bad rap, but it's because society doesn't get to see what CO's do.
It's a great job, but know the risks |
