Isn't stupid for employers to make you pay for a criminal background check?

Especially when you are 100% sure, you never committed a crime?

No it is not. As an employer, making an employee pay for thier own criminal background check can cut costs. Because people lie.
80% of applicants lie about past employment and criminal history. To curb those lies they are testing the applicants and making them pay for it so that they will not be so willing to lie.

It hurts all the applicants as a whole BUT it prevents the bad ones from being able to waste company time which in a sense cost the company money.

Jeanbug
Not stupid at all. You might be sure you've never committed a crime but THEY don't know that.

Huh?

They want you to pay, but not DO the check. If you're 100% sure, then you should be fine with paying because you know you'll pass. Then, when you get the job, you can always ask them to reimburse you.

Judy
Well, it's highly unusual - normally they would pay for it.

Your knowing you are clean has nothing to do with it. Your saying so isn't proof.

Steve
Sounds like you're working for the wrong company.

i agree with sginny
the problem is there are people out there who have made this necessary and the govt are the ones who set the price for these checks( surprise surprise!!)
an employer has no choice as the cost can be excessive especially if there is a high turnover of staff
( i know what you mean though its like getting a parking fine when you havent got a car!)

Don't work for them, then. If everyone said 'no' then the practise would stop.
