It is illegal in a job interview to ask?

I went on a job interview for a job I am well qualified for. This older man interviewed me and was sort of "friendly" in the way he smiled and talked at first. He kinda was leaning in when talking. Then he stopped talking and looked at my hand and noticed my wedding ring. He asked me if I was married. I told him yes. Then the tone changed. He backed up in his chair, was cold and seemed uninterested. Was I harrassed and discriminated because I am married? I was so upset I prepared for this interview and took a lot of time to do paperwork! Should i report him?

I am going to take another approach here. Instead on concentrating on him, perhaps take a look at yourself in this situation. What was your response? He may have been testing you, although not the best way to do it, he may have wanted to see how you would answer an awkward question.
I believe that a job interview is a two way discussion. You have every right to ask him questions too. The point of the interview is to determine if you are the right fit for the position. From this perspective it may have been time to respond with a question to him along the lines.... "what about my marriage status seems to concern you?" Do you believe it would be a hindrance to my performance, because I don't think it would be." Of course everyone has their own style but when you're looking for work, you are interviewing them as well. I realize this answer isn't going to be selected as the best one you've received and I am not suggesting you did anything wrong, I am only suggesting that you stick up for yourself and you'll eventually get what you want and what you deserve. It is not illegal to ask the question.

It is illegal to take adverse action based on your answer.

If you answered "yes" and did not get the position based on being married, they yes, that is illegal, but just asking the question is not illegal.

yes u should report him there would be nothing worse putting in all the hard work for the interview and be treated like that

I would report him Its discrimination. Just cause your married doesn't mean you cant do your job. My husband may work allot and get stressed out at times but our home life is our business and no one elses. I would stand up for yourself and not take what you got at all.

I would call the police (not the emergency) just to report it or ask if it is.
