Job hunting/public assistance while on FMLA leave?

One of my friends and I have been going back and forth about this for the past hour, and we are dying for an answer!
If you take and unpaid FMLA leave from you job, can you apply for public assistance since you're not getting paid?
Also, are you allowed to go on job interviews and/or accept a position with another company while on leave?

If you need to find out about the assistance, go to the nearest DCYS office and apply. The worse they can say is no. Be truthful, tell the office you plan on going back, but will not be getting paid for 6 weeks/12 weeks, whatever the time frame is.
As for looking for a new job, sure, but also be honest with your current employer, don't just not go back. They are waiting for you you honestly, so let them know if you find another position. |

You can apply for, and receive, public assistance while on FMLA.
As to going to job interviews, you certainly can.
However, if you received any benefits while on leave, such as subsidized insurance, you may be required to work out your notice or "pay back the company" for those benefits. |

Yes, you can get public assistance depending on family size and how much you are receiveing for your FMLA. I quit my job well on FMLA about 3 weeks ago, so I guess I'll see what happens. Hope this helps. |
