Job question??????? Is this legal?

I think I was technically laid off today, or some time this last week. I went in today to go check if they had me on the schedule for the next week and saw that my name was no longer on the schedule.
They have been firing a lot of people lately for bad behavior, but I have not been into work to break any rules since I last talked to my boss.
Because of the poor economy they have not been giving me many hours so the last time I talked to my boss she said she would keep me on the schedule and understood if I searched for a job elsewhere. I took this as "You are still an employee, but we can't fit you into the schedule, so if you find another job, we understand if you leave." RIGHT??
So when I went in today my boss was not there for me to question her about why I am not on the schedule, so I just left and as I was walking away I began to wonder if this meant I was laid off.

So my question is, if I am actually laid off, do they LEGALLY have to tell me, or is taking me off the schedule completely legal??

I am concerned they are trying to get away with a lot of things right now, and I know a lot of employees that are really upset with them, so this question is really boggling my mind!

I need some answers.

Thank you for letting me rant and rave..

I was also wondering if this is not legal, what do I do?? Who do I contact. etc...

I think legally they have to tell you. My job just went through laying a bunch of people off and they told the.

They don't have to tell you formally, although most places would. They can just not schedule you for hours, then after awhile, if they need you, start scheduling you again. Check in again and try to talk to your boss.

What do you think a lawyer would do for you if you could afford one? Get your job back? The company can legally lay you off, fire you, or just not give you hours. Sorry, not the answer you wanted, I know. Your understanding of what she was saying when you last talked to her was correct. Look for another job. Good luck.
