Jobs for an ex-offender in Salt Lake City?

Jobs for an ex-offender in Salt Lake City?

Do you folks have any recommendation of where an ex offender can seek employment in SLC, Utah? Are there companies or agencies who assist an otherwise ideal employee? I have a third degree felony from 5 months ago, and served 6 weeks time, and paid the fine...but cannot get hired! It was a traffic offense of failing to stop at the command of an officer. I was driving while sleep-deprived. I failed to pull over soon enough, and the cop was furious. It's now cost me my family, career and possibly my future.

It was the first and only arrest in my life, and I'm 54 years old.

Please help with info, if you can. I'm about to become homeless, as even Burger King didn't respond to my application.

If I can't work, I will be worthless to society. I was making $51,000 a year before that incident.

Haven't been able to earn a dime since May 4th, 2007.

Regardless of your crime, potential employers have the right to do background checks and not hire you because you spent time in jail.

My brother-in-law, upon exiting from a correctional facility, also found it hard to find work because of his criminal background. I would suggest, if you have one, working with your PO. S/he will be able to get leads for you and even may be able to pull strings if s/he is that type of person/PO.

If you do not have a PO, you may want to look into employment agencies, aka the unemployment office of your local county/city. They are there to help everyone, regardless if you've been in jail one time or multiple times. Also, since you are privledged to live in a big city, you have several employment agencies at your fingertips who will do the work for you. You take a test to find out what you are good at, what you excell in, what you are capable of doing/understanding, and then using what they have on record for available positions, line up interviews for you. They do background checks as well and as with employers, have the right to refuse you. But are you any better off than before if they refuse? Nope.

They cost money of course, but most, if not all, will subtract the fee from your pay check each pay day until you are paid in full. You have to watch though. Some employment agencies will continue to take a percentage from your paycheck as long as you are employed at the job 'they found for you.' Make sure you read --anything-- you are given to sign completely. Anything you do not understand or seems questionable, ask. Ask point black if they charge you as long as you are employed at a job.

The unemployment office of your county/city will be in the government section of your phone book. Employment agencies are in the yellow pages of the same phone book. Not sure if they are called "employment" or "unemployment" agencies. I believe that depends on the area you are from.

Good luck to you and will be praying you are able to find something and hopefuly it will be something you like doing.

First: you are not an "ex-offender". You are a convict. You have been CONVICTed of an offense that society deems a felony. Three ways exist to become an ex-con:
1) you are granted a new trial and are found innocent.
2) your CONVICTion is overturned on appeal.
3) you are granted clemency by the governor of your state.
Until one of these three happens you are a CONVICT!
And quit whining about how and why it happened. Grow up and deal with it.
Second: You will never make $51,000 a year for the rest of your life unless you start your own business.
Since 9/11/01 the entire world has gone security crazy. If you want a job picking up dog do-do someone will want to do a background check to make sure you don't steal the creepy little gnomes they put in their yard.
Third: do a reality check such as accepting the above info.
Hint: if you move out of state most companies will not pay the expense to do a nationwide search. In most states, if you choose to stay in Utah, you can have your record expunged after a few years if you aren't arrested for another crime.
Luck, Bro.

Go for a few sessions with a local career counselor. They know the job market in your area and are trained to help with the tough things. I'm sure your local high school and college career counselors are free- and if they're not what you're looking for they can at least refer you to one specializing in adults.

Meanwhile, keep your connections with your friends, neighbors, and former co-workers open because you never know when someone knows someone who is hiring. Maybe even volunteer part-time just to keep yourself busy. Have you also thought about seeing a counselor to help you sort out your feelings?

you can try answering surveys and getting paid to do so. It may not be the best thing, but it can cover up expenses until you get a real job, site is http://www.rippedwallet.com/darian2000 I've made $1,000+ from the surveys.
