I was laid off today, they are giving me four weeks severance pay. My last day is in three weeks and my severance will start after my last day (6-27-08). When/should i apply for unemployment? I'm also looking for a internship, if the internship wasn't payed..would this effect my unemployment if I receive it?

You file after you stop receiving your severance pay. There is usually a one-week waiting period and you should file during that week. If you do an internship for no pay, you do not need to tell them, as long as you are seeking full-time employment per the regulations. |

Apply right away. Your benefits probably won't start until your severance time is finished, but at least the paperwork will be moving through the system.
One of the requirements for collecting unemployment comp is that you are able to work and are looking for work, and if you took an unpaid internship you wouldn't be available for work so wouldn't typically be eligible for u.c, |

You should apply immediately. Today. Now.
Tell them about the severance pay and they
will know when your benefits begin.
It takes a while to investigate your case and
deem you eligible FIRST before they can
even begin to compensate you.
Start the process NOW, and all that will be
done. So when the severance runs out the
unemployment benefits will kick-in without
an interruption in your cash flow.
If you wait...even a day or two...the first question
they are going to ask is 'why did you wait to file'?
And if you wait all the way until your severance
runs out before filing, it could take another month
before you get any money.
So go start the filing process....NOW! |

Sorry to hear you are laid off! That's always a bummer, but it does make you look for better opportunities for yourself, so good luck to you! Sounds like you have some plans in place already!
You can apply for unemployment the day after your last day. Each state will deduct from your payments differently, sometimes partially for part time work of a certain amount of hours, or for severence pay for as long as it lasts (and be sure if that happens it's adjusted when it ends), but the important thing is to get in there early to get the max amount, because they average your income over the last however-many-months or years you've been working. Unpaid internship shouldn't affect unemployment pay, and may even help you avoid some of the job-hunting requirements, but it might vary from state to state.
