I am a 1L who is in the final stages of deciding where to work this summer. Working for one of various courts (bankruptcy, tax), the US attorney general's office, a district atty's office, private firms are my choices. It is my first time so I do not know very much about what I am getting in to. Private firms and higher and lower courts pay variably, but how much do summer clerks for state court judges tend to make?
My goal is to cover bills and earn well this summer, if you have any other money-related advice please post it would be so helpful

If your only concern is money, then go with a private firm. In most cases the larger the firm the more they pay summer associates. In general private firms pay more than courts/government jobs. Unless it is a judicial clerkship for a high level judge. But be careful when looking at the court system and judicial clerking positions, some of these are voluntary. Yes, the summer associate works for free in order to get the experience.
If you are looking at how the job will impact you in your future career, then you would want to pick something in the field of law you are interested in. OR for the private firm that may be willing to employ you after you graduate. |

You should be concerned about getting a job of any sort for the summer. Many law firms are cutting pay for first year attorneys, and laying off attorneys left and right. You are also running out of time, so you better start getting applications out.
If you have a personal connection through family members or family friends, that is probably a good route to take. |
