Hi, I can help you with your question as I'm going to school for law too. However, I don't know how it works in all law schools, in mine, you can't just include a story and get accepted. You have to literally serve the community and have proof of your deeds. During my first year, I was already accepted, but I had to take a break during this year. It was recommended by the counselors. As for your essay, please, pay close attention.
Files of progress and recommendation: Because we need proof, FOPAR (files of progress and recommendation) is a term I created where you store all organized notes of your progress, based on what's recommended for law school into one file. (Example shown below) You'd earn major progress when you also write about your FOPAR because it shows how much you want to get accepted. I carry mine inside a laptop computer, but it can also be also be kept nicely in a folder with paper, recommended in a bag or briefcase. Mine resembles:
------
My File of Recommendation's Appearance
Files of Progress and Recommendation
Folder(s) Community Service
Inside of "Community Service," I have "Motivational Speaking" and "Tutorials."
*Inside of motivational speaking, I have documents proving I spoke at the particular place, with a provided phone number for proof because law school staff would contact the source.
*In "Tutorials" folder, I have documents signed by the parents of the children as proof of them being tutored by my group and I. Also, I have a provided phone number of the buildings I used to tutor the children.
That's all I really needed for the examples. Let's move on.
Helping society: Becoming a lawyer is all about helping society the criminal world. Whether you're prosecutor to make sure real criminals get locked up, or a defense lawyer to help the innocent stay way from iron bars, you must have a goal to help society. Here are a few hints. Serve your community. For example, if you're trying to become a prosecutor, explain how you want to keep dangerous criminals out of society. If you choose defense attorney, explain how you feel about a majority of defendants are truly not-guilty, and you'd try your best to keep them away from prison. If you're trying to become a paralegal, explain how you want to work alongside either type of lawyer and help achieve his/her goals.
Motivational Speaking: Society is usually focused more the negative than the positive. Therefore, (assuming you're trying to become a lawyer, you don't need to work on your public speaking) you must find a place where children in need of motivational speaking would most likely be, and speak. Explain all the downsides of focusing on the negative rather than positive, and most likely, they would change their mind. After that, have the manager of the place you've spoken in add your speech to the FOPAR. Then, explain your deed inside your essay.
Community Service: In your essay, explain your community. For instance, if people live in or neighbor a bad neighborhood, try to figure out why the neighborhoods are bad. Gather a group of your intelligent friends to begin a tutorial service to kids in need, to prevent future criminals or people problematic to society. For instance, explain the downsides to lacking an education and how lack of education and crime link. If you feel can't accomplish the task, attempt something else.
In conclusion, if you organize your progress well, and serve the community, and share a story about what you did, you have a better chance. It worked for me. Good luck. |

Hi there,
the important thing is to be yourself. The personal essay gives the admissions committee glimpse at the real person as opposed to just numbers such as GPA and LSAT scores. I would focus on your strengths, you can capitalize on personal assets, play them up. I too am applying to Law School and I went to a pre-law conference where they showed us examples of what not to do on the personal essay. the most important thing is "don't lie", it may come back to haunt you. You can also type in "Personal Essay Samples" in a search and you will get a look at examples for admission to every type of School, not just Law, and then use that to comprise your own. Good luck. |

you really should seriously reconsider applying to law school..it's hell.......take a paralegal course and see if you like the work, don't ruin your life! don't do it!

What the school wants to see is something different. Think outside of the box. Come up with something unique, creative, and expressive. Come up with a story that will draw them in from the beginning and then throw them off in the end.
For an example: There was a boy named bob, ever since he was 2 he asked for . Every birthday and christmas he asked for only one thing, pink golf balls. He never told anyone in the family why he wanted pink golf-balls. 88 years later he was 90 and laying in hideathth bed, his family said please tell us why you wanted us to get you oink golf-balls every year, ok he said, the reason i wanted pink golf-balls all those years was because... then he died. A story with this form will reel them in, then completely throwing them off. In return they will definiatley remember your essay! |
