Law enforcment careers?

Check with your city law enforcement to see if they have a Jr. Cadete program or some kind of similar program for youths. Our city has one where you can ride along with officers and sit with them to learn about their job for a number of weeks. It would look good to the department that you did that and it would give you an idea of the in's and out's of the job itself.

Maybe look at your local college to see what kind of courses they may offer in law enforcement? An adult school?

Call up the local law enforcement city desk and ask them for recommendations, they are really helpful to getting you started out on the career path.

visit the local law enf. agencies and get to know people. then when your old enough, they may sponsor you through academy. keep your record clean- even driving record. when you are out of school you can take continuing ed classes regarding EMS etc just to get to know people. here in nc, most agencies will pay more for an officer who has ems certs and or fire rescue certs.
sign up at a local community college for criminal justice classes. thats the best places to network. been there done that- got the t-shirt. you can also get on some yahoo groups. i have a few - look under criminal justice students, and highway patrol for mine. there was one where i ended up with some clown stalking me- wasnt from my group though! police was the name of that group- but you may have better luck there.

you can go on line and check the requirements for most police departments - (I'm sure if you google "montana state police" and get their website - somewhere on there they will tell you what the requirements are

if you look you will find that for most "State Police" jobs there are very stringent physical tests you must pass to be elligible -
you will also find that - almost all police forces now require one of two things -
1- prior military service or
2- a minimum of 2 years (60 credits) of college

you will also have to take a written test - which will have about 70-100 questions on it - takes about 2 1/2 - 3 hours
if you pass this - then a psychological test -
and then a physical

states/cities handle veterans/non vets differently - for instance

NYPD gives vets - 5 points on their written exam - so if they actually score an 85 - their score jumps to 90

on the other hand - in New Jersey - there is one test given every 24 months for all police jobs (except state police) within the state - for anyone to be hired they must first "pass the written test" - then they are called by the hiring authourity (town, county etc.) in this order -
1- all disabled vets
2- vets
3- non vets in order of their test scores high to low - at this level the hiring authority can review 3 applicants -
so - they can call someone who scored 80, someone who scored 81, and someone who scored 82 - they do not have to take the highest score - they can choose any of the 3 people

um..take courses at your school about law enforcement? it will be easy if you look around for things to do
